The Recovery Rebirth Podcast, hosted by Dominick and Jillian, continues to delve into discussion on trauma and how it shaped our life experiences. We talk about divorce, parental abandonment due to mental illness and death, bullying, and other adverse experiences from childhood. Such experiences caused us to develop maladaptive coping mechanisms. These strategies seemed to work when we were young children in survival mode. However, these tactics failed to help transition into high-functioning adults.
The correlation between trauma and romantic relationships is a focal point of this conversation. Our childhoods didn’t provide us a template for what healthy relationships look like. As a result, we hurt ourselves and others as we fumbled through relationships.
We touch lightly on attachment theory/attachment styles that are formed in childhood. Many people in recovery suffer from insecure attachment styles. But these aren’t static and we can work toward a more secure attachment style.
Lastly, we talk about our healing in recovery and how we’re learning to have healthier relationships; both platonic and romantic. We acknowledge we still have work to do, but are grateful for the growth and transformation that is possible through recovery. The 3 A’s: awareness, acceptance and action; is one recovery tool that can help us break our unhealthy patterns. Regardless of the type of trauma experienced, we want to share the message of hope that recovery is possible.
